Moai Monoliths (Easter Island, Chile)

Stone Statues

Easter Island, off the coast of Chile, is home to the moai -887 giant stone statues carved from hardened volcanic ash, They average 13 feet (4 meters) tall and 14 tons each, but  "El Gigante,"  which still lies in its quarry, would be 72 feet (21.5 meters) tall if erected! Who carved these? and when? No one knows for sure, though scientists believe they date to 1400 to 1600 AD.
