Petra (Jordan)
Ancient City of Stone
Forgotten for centuries, the 2000 year old city of Petra, carved into slopes of Mount Hor, was rediscovered in 1812. This was once a flourishing Nabataean urban center in the heart of the ancient Near East, with a population of perhaps 20,000 - 30,00. Its name means "Rock" in Greek - for the many temples, tombs, and buildings were chiseled by hand from the mountain cliffs.
