Machu Picchu (Peru)

Incan City Ruins

Over a mile up in the Peruvian mountains lie the ruins of an ancient Incan city- Machu Picchu (meaning "Old Peak" in the Quechua language). It was built around 1450, but was abandoned 100 years later when the Inca Empire collapsed under European Spanish conquest.

The ruins of this incredible city were not rediscovered until 1911. Amazingly, the buildings were all made with polished stone blocks without mortar.
