Roman Amphitheater



Gladiatorial contest, dramas,animal hunts -even mock sea battles- once took place in this ancient Roman theater. It was built in 70-80 A.D. under the emperors Vespasian and Titus, and held 50,000 spectators. It was built as an ellipse: length 615 ft x width 510 ft x height 157 ft (189 x 156 x 48 m). It had flooring over top of tunnels and animal cages. The entire bottom level was flooded for sea battles.
