National Memorial
Standing 6000 feet above sea level, this granite mountain near Rapid city was named after Charles E. Rushmore, a New York mining lawyer. On August 10, 1907, sculptor Gutzon Borglum began carving the 60- foot- high (18.3 m) faces of four American presidents; George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Most of the carving was done with precise placement of dynamite
