Suez Canal (Egypt)

Man-made Waterway

This man-mad canal goes right through the narrow land area in Egypt where it meets the Sinai Peninsula. It links the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea. It was dug out and built in 1869 so that ships from Asia would not have to go all the way around Africa to reach Europe. It is 101 miles long and 984 feet (300 m) at its narrowest point. It is one of the most important waterways in the world.
