Parts of speech
There are eight parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions conjunctions, and interjections. Knowing how to identify each part of speech will help you understand the parts of a sentences and write clearly and effectively.
- a NOUN is a word that names people, places things or ideas. PEOPLE (mother, the boss, Lidia) PLACES (beach, mall, USA) THINGS (chair, shelf, house)IDEAS (freedom, hope, honesty)
- a PRONOUN is a word that takes the place of a noun, a group of words acting like a noun, or another pronoun. (you, me, their, herself, us, who, any, something)
- a VERB is a word that express action or state of being. It tells what a noun does or helps to tell what or how it is. Some verbs link the subject of a sentence with other verbs; these are called linking verbs. ACTION (run, fly, rest, think, write, think, eat) BEING, LINKING (be, appear, have, smell)
- an ADJECTIVE a word that modifies the meaning of a noun or pronoun. quite, large, clean, pink, glorious.
- an ADVERB is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb by making its meaning more specific. It can answer the questions when, where, how, how much, or to what extent or degree. WHEN(now, soon, early, never) WHERE (here, inside, everywhere) HOW(carefully, happily) TO WHAT EXTENT OR DEGREE (very, somewhat, not)
- a PREPOSITION is a word that shows the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to some other word in a sentence (under, before, to, of, with, by, at)
- a CONJUNCTION is a word or a group of words that joins single words or sentence parts together (and, but, or, when, as wherever, although, however)
- an INTERJECTION is a word or a group of words that expresses emotions or exclamation. It has no grammatical connections to other words.
